Senior Payroll Officer

Senior end-to-end payroll role | 1,200+ employees | National, multi-entity payroll
The Shoe Group (TSG) is looking for an experienced Senior Payroll Officer to join our Payroll team at our Support Office in Gillman.

This is a hands-on senior payroll position supporting the fortnightly end-to-end payroll for more than 1,200 employees across multiple companies and employing entities, states and territories.

Reporting to the Payroll & Compliance Manager, you will also act as the operational 2IC for Payroll, providing coverage when the Manager is on leave or unavailable. This isn't a people management position — you'll be the senior technical payroll resource helping ensure the payroll continues to run accurately, compliantly and on time.

We're looking for someone who genuinely understands the complete payroll lifecycle and has the experience and confidence to work across all stages of a large and complex payroll.

About the role
You'll be joining a small Payroll team responsible for a significant and complex national payroll. That means you'll have broad exposure and genuine involvement across the payroll cycle rather than working within a narrowly defined area.

As the Senior Payroll Officer, you'll also be trusted to provide operational continuity when the Payroll & Compliance Manager is away. You'll help coordinate payroll priorities, resolve complex matters and support the team technically, while formal people management remains with the Payroll & Compliance Manager.

The role is based at our Gillman Support Office and works Monday to Friday from the office. There are currently no plans for this position to work from home.

What you'll be doing
In this role, you will:

• Undertake end-to-end processing of our fortnightly payroll for 1,200+ employees
• Manage payroll across multiple companies, employing entities, states and territories
• Review and validate time and attendance data and resolve payroll exceptions
• Process employee changes, allowances, deductions, adjustments, leave, back payments and terminations
• Complete payroll validation, reconciliations, finalisation and post-payroll activities
• Interpret and apply Modern Awards, industrial instruments and relevant payroll legislation
• Ensure the correct treatment of PAYG, superannuation and other statutory payroll requirements
• Investigate and resolve complex payroll discrepancies and employee queries
• Act as a senior technical point of reference for other members of the Payroll team
• Provide operational 2IC coverage for the Payroll & Compliance Manager when required
• Work closely with People & Culture, Finance and operational teams
• Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes, controls and systems

What we're looking for
We're looking for an experienced payroll professional who has developed strong capability across the full end-to-end payroll process.

Ideally, you will bring:

• Around 10 years' experience in payroll, with substantial hands-on end-to-end processing experience
• Experience personally processing payroll for a large workforce, ideally 500+ employees
• Experience with payrolls of 1,000+ employees highly regarded
• Experience processing payroll across multiple Australian states and territories
• Strong knowledge of Australian payroll legislation, Modern Awards and industrial instruments
• Strong knowledge of PAYG, superannuation, leave, allowances, deductions, back payments and termination payments
• Experience completing payroll reconciliations, validation, finalisation and post-payroll processes
• Experience working with complex time and attendance requirements and roster-based workforces
• Experience with large-scale payroll and workforce management systems
  Strong Excel, numerical and analytical skills
• Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work to critical payroll deadlines
• Confidence investigating complex payroll issues and providing accurate technical advice
• A collaborative and professional approach when working with employees, managers and other stakeholders

Experience with Dayforce would be highly regarded.

Importantly, we're looking for someone who has been hands-on across the complete payroll cycle. Experience working for a large organisation is valuable, but this position requires someone who has personally managed end-to-end payroll activities rather than specialising in only one component of a larger payroll process.
